First visit to the Colville Indian Agency
Posted on 29 September 2009
A wonderful turn out for a day that started rather poorly. Having just moved and incompletely unpacked, I couldn’t find anything, or get a decent start to the day. Everything required detective or some kind of extra work; Where’s the Iron? Where’s my darn razor? Oops I need to finish the new student packet to get Hayden enrolled in school. I finally made it out to the car at about the time I said I’d be at the Agency.
Phew, finally making it to the car I wondered what else could go wrong? I didn’t have to wonder long.
The answer was about 3 feet of wire the end of which was buried in my tire. Yanking it out I could hear the air hiss and drove rapidly to Les Schwab who in typical Les Schwab style repaired it at no charge and sent me on my way.
The offices were in a newer building on the campus, a grey “U” shaped building with the Public Defender’s offices on the right, the Office of the Tribal Prosecutor in the middle and the Tribal Police Department on the left side. The incumbent Public Defender Mike Larsen graciously introduced me to a number of people, including Tribal Spokesperson Ms. Sabrina Desautel, and the Paralegal/Office Administrator Jacqueline Trevino. After lunch it was time to visit corrections.
John Dick Corrections Commander asked Lt. Zacherle to provide a tour which he did exceptionally and without missing anything it seemed. The facility is a state of the art complex incorporating the capacity to house men, women and juvenile offenders from minimal to maximum security while incorporating the ability to provide concessions for spiritual practices, GED education and the beginnings of a work placement capacity for post-release.
The best part of the day however was the drive home. The view, and the thought of being able to see it on the way home every day for the coming years filled me with contentment.
This doesn’t really do it justice, here is a link to a full size picture http://bit.ly/a51Ft I think I’m going to love this job.

Thanks Steve, I added your blog site to my Blogroll. Let me know if you’d like it to say something other than Ferry County Defense.
